The team, currently 5th in Liga MX with 6 points (2W-0D-1L) and a goal difference of +2, secured its spot after a dramatic final round of group-stage results.
How did Monterrey reach the quarterfinals?
Monterrey advanced thanks to losses by Bravos de Juárez and Cruz Azul, as well as a draw for Tigres. The Chicago Fire played a key role in their qualification by defeating Cruz Azul 2-1 in the final minute. The U.S. side also sold Hugo Cuypers, the tournament’s top scorer in the group stage.
