Club de Fútbol Monterrey failed to break down Tigres UANL on Sunday, drawing 0-0 in a match that summed up Rayados' stuttering start to the Apertura 2026 and finished with two men sent off. The referee added six minutes at the end of the game and dismissed both Gerardo Arteaga, of Monterrey, and Diego Lainez, of Tigres, for violent conduct, in a contest defined more by tension than by clear chances.
Few chances, two goalkeepers stand tall
Monterrey pushed hard for a goal in the second half but could not get past Nahuel Guzmán. Uros Djurdjevic tried a right-footed effort from the box that went narrowly wide, while Orbelín Pineda had two attempts, one blocked after a pass from Érick Aguirre and another saved by Guzmán through the middle following an assist from Luca Orellano. Diego Rossi also tested Guzmán from outside the box, this time set up by Stefan Medina. For Tigres, Rodrigo Aguirre fired from more than 35 yards out, assisted by Emiliano Gómez, but missed the target.
Cards and forced changes
Rafael Guerrero and Uros Djurdjevic both picked up yellow cards in a physical contest from the start. Substitutions came thick and fast on both sides. Monterrey brought on Fidel Ambríz for Óliver Torres, Érick Aguirre for Ricardo Chávez, Djurdjevic for Lucas Ocampos, Orellano for Jesús Corona and Medina for Carlos Salcedo, the last one forced by injury. Tigres responded with Ozziel Herrera for Juan Brunetta, Rafael Guerrero for Ricardo Monreal, Emiliano Gómez for Alan Franco, also injury forced, Diego Sánchez for the sent-off Lainez and César Araújo for Rômulo.
What the table shows
The draw leaves Monterrey 12th in Liga MX with 9 points from a possible 18 after six matchdays, with a record of three wins and three defeats and recent form reading loss, loss, draw, draw, win. The club has scored 13 goals and conceded 10, a +3 goal difference that is not enough to lift it into the upper half of the standings. Rayados sit seven points behind leaders America.
Before this stalemate, Monterrey had lost 2-0 to Toluca, with goals from Alexis Vega in the 4th minute and Hélio Júnior Nunes de Castro in the 70th, and drawn 2-2 away at America. A 1-3 defeat to Atletico San Luis and a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire round out an uneven run that can be checked in the club's stats section.
The schedule offers no rest. Monterrey's next fixture is at home to Cruz Azul on 20 September at the Estadio BBVA, against a side currently eighth in the table. With Arteaga suspended and Salcedo now a doubt after his forced withdrawal, the coaching staff must settle on a defence that fans can check on the club's squad list before hosting the Cementeros.
