Club de Fútbol Monterrey is trying to close the historical gap in the Clasico Regio against Tigres UANL, a derby in which the felines hold 51 wins to Rayados' 47 across 142 matches, with 44 draws between the two sides. The Monterrey derby, which reached its 143rd edition on Saturday, 12 September, at the Estadio BBVA, spans more than six decades across the league, the liguilla, the Copa MX and Concacaf competitions.
A ledger that favors the felines
The gap in the head-to-head record is just four matches, a margin that has stayed tight across decades despite the different eras of dominance each club has enjoyed. The 44 draws confirm that the Clasico Regio has historically been a game of fine margins rather than one-sided results.
Tigres also ahead in the trophy count
In overall silverware, Tigres have 16 titles compared with Rayados' 14. The felines have lifted 8 Liga MX championships (1977-78, 1981-82, Apertura 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, Clausura 2019 and Clausura 2023), 3 Copa MX titles (1975-76, 1995-96 and Clausura 2014), 4 Campeon de Campeones crowns (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2022-23) and one Concacaf Champions League title, won in 2020.
Rayados, meanwhile, have won 5 Liga MX titles (Mexico 1986, Clausura 2003, Apertura 2009, Apertura 2010 and Apertura 2019), 3 Copa MX titles (1991-92, Apertura 2017 and 2019-20), a Concacaf Recopa in 1993, and stand out continentally with 5 Concacaf Champions League titles, in 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2019 and 2021, more than any other club from the region in that competition.
Monterrey's current form before hosting Cruz Azul
The present league situation offers little short-term relief. Monterrey sit eleventh in the table, with 9 points from six games after a 3-0-3 record, seven points behind leaders Club America.
The attack has scored 13 goals and conceded 10, for a +3 goal difference so far this campaign. The latest result was a setback: Toluca 2-0 Monterrey on 7 September, with goals from Alexis Vega in the 4th minute and Helio Junio Nunes de Castro in the 70th.
